6 Tips For Healthy Eating

6 Tips for Healthy Eating FI

When it comes to healthy eating there are a lot of myths and misconceptions. It doesn’t help that new and often contradictory advice emerges every day. But the basics of eating right really don’t change.

Here are 6 healthy eating tips that I wish everyone knew.

1. Eat 30 different plants a week

Eating a range of different plants feeds your gut microbes which in turn improves your gut health. Each time you eat, fill half of your plate with plants. Chips don’t count! Choose “crunchy” vegetables, such as broccoli, green beans, and leafy greens like kale and Swiss chard. Here’s what 30 plants a week can actually look like:
Vegetables – Tomatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, pepper, sweetcorn, spinach, potato, onion, peas, carrot.
Fruit – Grapes, apricot, strawberries, watermelon, blueberries, raspberries, apple, banana, orange, kiwi.
Grains – Oats, brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, wholewheat flour.
Legumes, Nuts & Seeds – Chickpeas, lentils, tinned beans, pack of seeds, pack of nuts

2. Eat a healthy breakfast

Some say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Whatever your view, eating a healthy breakfast helps kick start your metabolism, improve mental function, and helps you make better food choices throughout the day. The ideal breakfast includes protein, healthy fats, and some complex carbohydrates. The protein takes longer to digest and together with the complex carbohydrates and fibre helps you feel fuller for longer, which will keep those cravings at bay.

3. Don’t starve yourself

Starving yourself is unhealthy and nearly always backfires. If you don’t eat enough calories throughout the day, you’ll be more likely to overindulge at night. When you focus your efforts all day on skimping on food, you set yourself up for binge eating later on. And instead of sitting down to a healthy evening meal, you’re more likely to reward yourself for being so “good” all day by reaching for ice cream or cake.

4. Make a shopping list

The biggest mistake people make is not knowing what they need and, instead, browsing the aisles for inspiration. That leads to buying more packaged foods and less fresh, whole foods. Go in with a list based on recipes you intend to cook for the week, and focus your shopping on your list.

5. Reduce your processed foods

Most packaged food is bad for you. Instead choose healthy options that make nutritious cooking easier, like vegetables and beans/pulses, and skip the meals in a box that are loaded with preservatives, hidden sources of fat, and too much sugar and sodium.

6. Switch to wholegrain

When it comes to carbohydrates, brown is better. Whole-grain foods (like whole wheat, brown rice, and oatmeal) contain more nutrients and fibre than their processed white cousins. Not only are these complex carbohydrates healthier for you, but they also help keep you full longer.
