If you are going to achieve your goals, you have to believe in yourself. That is a fairly obvious thing to say. You have to think you are capable of making your dreams a reality. You have to believe you have the right skills and resources to become a success.
Maybe you call it self-belief, self-esteem or even self-confidence. Whatever you call it, it is simply a deep-rooted belief that you have what it takes. The abilities, inner resources, talents and skills to create your dreams.
Believing in yourself is a choice
Believing in yourself is an attitude. It is an attitude you develop over time. Although it helps if you had positive and supportive parents, most of us had parents who unknowingly passed on to us the same limiting beliefs and negative conditioning they grew up with.
But remember, the past is the past, and there is no benefit gained from blaming your parents for your current level of self-belief. It is now your responsibility to take charge of your own self-beliefs. You must choose to believe that you can do anything and set your mind to achieve anything because you can. If you regularly practice positive self-talk and affirmations you can learn to do almost anything.
You can accomplish anything if you simply believe it is possible. If you believe in yourself and act as if it is possible then you will do the things that are necessary to bring about the result. If you believe it is impossible you will not do what is necessary and you will not produce the results. Either way, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Change the way you choose to see yourself. Recognise the potential that is lying dormant in you that can be released if you choose to believe in yourself and your abilities.
“I am looking for a lot of men who have an infinite capacity to not know what cannot be done”
– Henry Ford
You have to stop saying “I can’t”
The phrase “I can’t” is the most negative word in the human vocabulary. If you are going to achieve your goals you need to stop saying I can’t. The words ‘I can’t’ disempower you. They actually make you weaker when you say them. Your brain is designed to solve any problem and reach any goal that you give it. The words you think and say actually affect your body.
Babies are a great example of this. When you were a baby there was no stopping you. You thought you could climb up on anything. No barrier was too big for you to attempt to overcome. Your sense of invincibility was slowly eroded by the emotional and physical conditioning that you received from your parents, friends and teachers. This transformed your decisions in response to their conditioning until you were no longer able to believe you could.
If you remove ‘I can’t’ from your vocabulary you can. When you pursue your goals without any limiting beliefs about what you can accomplish, you can create unexpected and extraordinary results. Don’t ever let someone else tell you what you are capable of. With training, determination and hard work, you can eventually do anything you set your mind to. Remember your self-beliefs are a choice. Make the choice to believe in yourself no matter what anyone else says.
It’s never too late to start to be happy
Some of the most common excuses people use to avoid the risk of going for their dreams are:
- I am too old
- It is too late for me
- I didn’t start soon enough
Well, that is complete rubbish. It is just your limiting inner self-belief talking to you, trying to convince you, you can’t achieve what you want.
Your limiting beliefs come and go fast. So fast, in fact, that you rarely have time to question them. Because your thoughts determine how you feel, and how you act, it’s important to challenge any thoughts that cause you harm.
The simple fact is, it is never too late to do anything. It is never too late to start. Don’t listen to your limiting self-beliefs. Prove them wrong. You are always ready to start.
Self-belief is more important than knowledge.
Nearly 30% of billionaires don’t have a degree. Although education and a commitment to continually learn new ideas are essential to success, a formal education isn’t a requirement. Just ask the likes of Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. The bottom line is you can start from anywhere and at any time to create a successful life for yourself.
What other people think about you is none of your business.
You have to believe in yourself when no one else does. That is what will make you a winner.
If having others believing in you and your dreams was a requirement for success most of us would never accomplish anything. You need to base your decisions on what you want to do, on your goals and desires, not on the goals, desires, opinions and judgements of your parents, friends, parent, children and work colleagues. Some will try to project their own limiting self-beliefs on to you and others will just be jealous of the goal you desire. So stop worrying about what other people think about you and follow your heart.
The 18-40-60 Principle
- When you are 18 you worry about what everybody is thinking of you.
- At 40 you don’t give a damn about what people think about you.
- When you are 60 you realise nobody’s been thinking about you at all.
And that is the surprise. Most of the time nobody’s thinking about you at all. They are too busy worrying about their own lives. If they are thinking about you at all, they are wondering what you are thinking about them! Meanwhile, all the time you are wasting worrying about what other people think about your ideas, your goals, your clothes and your hair. All that time could be better spent focusing on doing the things that will achieve your goals and believing in yourself. You need to start thinking like a 60-year-old as soon as possible.
